While the topic of the book is focused on higher education, it speaks to the broader issue of the difficulty of creating meaningful change at the institutional level. The book explores the unconscious biases so prevalent in the world of higher education that unintentionally create barriers to the academic success of low-income and minority students. Gumbel details the difficulty the GSU administration faced when trying to convince stakeholders to buy into a radical new way of thinking and operating so that data-driven decisions could be used to tear down barriers and make sure that every student at GSU gets a hand-up on the ladder of success. There are 'good guys' and 'bad guys' in this story and you may recognize your own biases reflected in that of the 'bad guys' in this story. The 'bad guys' represent the usual way of regarding how to measure the success of a university, largely influenced by the annual USNWR rankings. I admit, prior to reading this story I was of that mindset as well. This story has given me hope that the American Dream is within reach to all citizens, not just some citizens.
